Domain Membership Warning

If your laptop has been configured as a Domain Member (for example, at another University), and you still wish to retain your Domain Membership, ignore the following instructions and get in touch with your Point of Contact (PoC). If you proceed, your Domain Membership will break.

END OF WARNING

  1. Ensure that your Windows box is a member of the workgroup CSLAB. To determine this, please use the following instructions
    1. Right click on "My Computer"
    2. Left click on "Properties"
    3. Click on the "Network Identification" tab
    4. Click on "Properties" button
    5. Make sure that your machine's workgroup is: CSLAB
    6. The machine's name is irrelevant.
    7. If your machine is not a member of CSLab, please change it by adding CSLAB in the text box.
    8. Click OK.
    9. This will then require a reboot.
  2. Now map your home directory.
    1. Right click "My Computer", and left click on "Map Network Drive ..."
    2. In the popup window perform the following steps:
      1. Select a Drive letter (e.g. H:)
      2. Under Folder, supply the following string: \\smb\username, where username is your CSLab username. If you are using the WIFI to access your home directory use instead: \\smb.cs.toronto.edu\username
      3. Select "Reconnect at logon", if you wish this drive to be automatically mapped for you each time you start your computer.
      4. Click the "Finish" button.

If you use the same username and password for your Windows box as for your CSLab account, your drive will be mapped for you without prompting. If you use a different username and password, you will be prompted for your CSLab username and password.

{i} If your login fails, here are some basic troubleshooting steps:

  1. If you receive an error message, the chances are that there is a problem with your password.
  2. If your password is longer than 8 characters, only supply the first 8 characters.
  3. If your password does contain an '[' or a ']', change it so that it does not. SAMBA can balk when offered such passwords.
  4. If this still does not work, you might have to resynch your password with our SAMBA password file. The easiest way to do this is to reset your password via passwd. Wait 30 minutes and try again.
