Norton Anti-Virus for Macs

Note: OSX 10.4 no longer comes with StuffIt, which is needed to unpack the antivirus software. To get !Stuffit expander please go their web site: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html

  1. Go to http://antivirus.utoronto.ca/ and scroll down the screen until you reach the "How to Get the Software" section. Click on either the "Macintosh version for students" or the "Macintosh version for faculty and staff".

  2. Enter in your UTORid (if you do not have a UTORid go to https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/., your UTORid password, staff number, and number of installations. Lastly, specify which operating system you are using (If you are unsure if you are using OS X or not, click on the Apple Icon on the top right hand corner and select "About This Mac"). When done filling out the form click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen.

    At this point the download screen will show you that the software is downloading and place an 'Install Norton AntiVirus' icon on your screen.

  3. Click on the Install icon on your screen. You will be asked to authenticate to make sure you have the correct permissions to install software on the computer. Enter your "Name" and "Password".

  4. Click the "Continue" button on the Norton screen.
  5. Click the "Accept" button for the license agreement.
  6. Click the "Continue" button on the Table of Contents.
  7. Click the "Install" button.
  8. A window informing you that Norton comes with a one year subscription to virus definition updates appears. Click the "OK" button.
  9. The last window telling you that installation was successful will appear. Click "Continue" and then "Restart."

  10. If you receive a "Norton AutoProtect" error message, upon rebooting the computer (OSX 10.2 and OSX 10.3., click "OK". This will fix itself when you run LiveUpdate. If you receive a "SymEvent.kext" error message, click the "Don't Use" button. The error too will fix itself when you run LiveUpdate.

  11. On the top "toolbar" select the "Go" option and then "Applications".

  12. Double click on the Norton AntiVirus icon.

  13. Click the "Run LiveUpdate" button.

  14. Select the "Update Everything Now" option

  15. You will be required to authenticate again. Simply type in your password.
  16. Click "OK" at the bottom left hand corner. You're done.
