Precondition
Please be aware that you must be on one of the CSLab networks in order to access our printers. If you are on wifi, you may need to connect to one of the VPNs to add a new printer, but from that point on you should be able to print without a vpn connection.
Selecting a Printer
The easiest way to determine the name and model of the printer you want to use is to walk over and look at it. All the printers we support should have their queue name on a label on the front or top of the printer.
Please note that it is important that you do not choose a universal printer driver.
Setting Up a Printer
- Click Windows Start Menu Icon and click 'Settings'.
- Click 'Bluetooth & Devices'
- Click 'Printers & Scanners'.
- Click 'Add device'.
-
It will begin looking for a printer/scanner, but will not find any.
Click 'Add a new device manually' when the option appears. -
Select a printer by name. Type in 'http://printers.cs.toronto.edu/printers/printer name'.
For example, if your printer is lw-ba1234 you would enter http://printers.cs.toronto.edu/printers/lw-ba1234.
It is critical that you use the correct name for the printer, as it will not offer you a list from which to select a printer. - After you choose your printer click Next.
-
In the Add Printer Wizard window, click the Manufacturer of the printer (HP) and the printer driver (for example HP LaserJet 4250 PCL6).
In some cases, you may have to use windows update or manually download a driver if there is not a compatible one included in windows.
It is important that you do not choose a universal print driver.
If offered multiple choices for a particular model, choosing a PCL6 driver is the safest bet.
Click OK. - In the 'You've successfully added lw-ba1234 on printers.cs.toronto.edu' window, click Next.
- You will be prompted to print a test page, click 'Print a test page'.
- Your printer should print a test page successfully. Click Close.
- Click Finish.
If you wish to be able to print double-sided (duplex), you will need to manually tell Windows that the printer has a duplex unit installed (all of our printers have a duplex unit)
- Click Windows Start Menu Icon and click 'Settings'.
- Click Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Right-click the printer you are setting up, and select 'Printer properties'.
- Click 'Device Settings'.
- Click the drop down for Duplex Unit and select Installed, and then OK.
- When you print something, in the print dialog window choose 'More Settings' and then under the 'Print on Both Sides' option, select 'Yes, flip over'. Click OK.
